Interview with Lexitas: Jojo Hernandez
Jojo Hernandez, our VP of Operations (MW Region) does an amazing job at Lexitas, but a lot of that happens behind the scenes. We all benefit from her work, but we don’t always get to see how it happens. I appreciated getting to know Jojo a little better, and I hope this helps you get to know her a little better, too.
Debbie Weaver:
Hi there! Thanks so much for taking the time to answer some questions and share a little bit about yourself.
Let’s start with the basics: Can you tell me a little bit about your professional background?
Jojo Hernandez:
For more than two decades, I have dedicated myself to the legal industry. Beginning in the copy business, I diligently climbed the professional ladder. I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have had the privilege of not only establishing my own successful copy business, but also expanding it into the field of electronic discovery in Los Angeles, which was eventually acquired by DTI in 2000.
Debbie:
Did you originally plan to do the kind of work you’re doing now?
Jojo:
Never in my wildest dreams did I envision myself landing in the legal industry. When I migrated to this country, all I hoped for was to find a decent job that could meet my basic needs.
Debbie:
What is the educational and/or professional path that led you to join Lexitas?
Jojo:
I have a genuine passion for connecting with and mentoring individuals who are eager to progress in their careers. When the opportunity to join this organization arose, I was struck by the alignment of its values and culture with my own. This synergy filled me with a sense of optimism and excitement about the potential for personal growth and learning. It truly feels like the perfect blend of mentoring and self-improvement – a chance to thrive in both areas.
Debbie:
What do you really love about your job?
Jojo:
I cherish the fact that my voice is not only heard but also valued, and I'm provided with the guidance and resources necessary to excel. Every day feels like a thrilling match where we strive not only to win, but to secure the championship trophy.
Debbie:
What are some of the things you get the most satisfaction from at work?
Jojo:
I find great satisfaction in streamlining operations by implementing efficient processes that not only boost productivity, but also lead to cost reduction. I also find fulfillment in nurturing team development, achieving operational excellence, tackling intricate challenges with innovative solutions, building and maintaining client relationships, and consistently meeting organizational objectives.
Debbie:
How do you go about strengthening Operations at Lexitas? What exactly does that entail?
Jojo:
First, I had to document current processes to help me identify inefficiencies. Second, I had to evaluate current technology and make considerations to implement systems that can streamline workflow and provide a competitive product. Third, I had to establish clear metrics and KPIs for each department to be able to track and measure performance.
This ongoing process involves an extensive data collection effort, encompassing the current state and projecting towards an envisioned future state.
Debbie:
What do you look for when trying to identify opportunities for improvement?
Jojo:
While data remains the primary driver of operational enhancements, the invaluable insights gained from employee, resource, and customer feedback provide an additional layer of refinement. This holistic approach ensures that decisions are not only data-driven, but also consider the human element, ultimately leading to more comprehensive and effective solutions.
Debbie:
That makes sense. What tools or skills do you find yourself using most in order to be successful at your job?
Jojo:
First and foremost, my leadership and management skills. Also my legal knowledge and technical proficiency. Lastly, my ability to find solutions and communicate effectively.
Debbie:
How do you define success in your role? It is primarily metrics-based, or are other factors involved? What does a win in Operations look like?
Jojo:
Success or win in Operations is the combination of meeting or exceeding performance metrics, achieving high client satisfaction scores, successfully managing and developing our team, and implementing initiatives that lead to increased efficiency and profitability.
Debbie:
Culture has become an important focus for organizations over the last few years. How do you help build
a strong culture that has an impact on an organization-wide level?
Jojo:
For me, the most crucial strategy for building a strong organizational culture is leading by example. I am dedicated to fostering a workplace where every employee feels genuinely respected, included, and valued. I wholeheartedly embrace the true essence of Lexitas’ SPIRITED values – Service Excellence, Positivity, Innovation, Respect, Initiative, Teamwork, Ethics, and Diversity – and try to ensure that these core values spread through every facet of our organization's operations and interactions.
Debbie:
I love that focus and alignment. Sometimes it’s not always so easy, though. What are some of the most challenging parts of your job? What are some of the things that take a little more time and patience?
Jojo:
The most challenging aspect of my job lies in resource allocation. Because of the current shortage of court reporters, we have to carefully balance both reporter and client expectations while adhering to varying state regulations. Second is the task of maintaining a positive culture around growth that didn’t morph organically, making sure that it aligns with the organization’s values and goals.
Debbie:
What is your favorite part of approaching work each day? What gets you up in the morning and keeps you engaged?
Jojo:
The prospect of a new day brings with it the opportunity to absorb fresh knowledge and to serve as a positive influence on every member of the team. This anticipation fuels my drive and enthusiasm each morning.
